WHAT IS CYNOPRAXIS?
Cynopraxis (‘Cyno’ means ‘dog’, ‘praxis’ means ‘to do things’) is a training theory that recognizes that dogs and humans get along best together when they understand each other’s motivations. It may seem complex, but actually it happens all the time when dog and human form habits and routines based on what each requires from the other.
According to Stephen Lindsay, cynopraxic theory refers ‘to the collective exchanges between the trainer, dog and family aimed at promoting interactive harmony, mutual appreciation, and an improved life experience with the dog. It is a voluntary (and sometimes involuntary), consciously chosen set of activities for the purpose of ‘enhancing the human-dog bond while improving the dog’s quality of life.’
The more you understand the underlying principles of cynopraxic theory, the more you can put them to work to your advantage – without having to do any unnecessary ‘training’. And the fun thing is, the more you know about your dog, the more you’re already using cynopraxis to create a harmonious household!
From Steven R. Lindsay’s Handbook Vol. 1 pp 389-392
“...The term is composed of two Greek roots: cyno (kunos) oder “dog” and praxis (prassein) “to do”. Praxis refers to the application of theoretical knowledge for some practical purpose. In the present context, it refers to the application of ethology, leraning theory, and supporting areas of scientific research (e.g. Neurobiology) to the humane management and control of dog behavior....”
